The Great St Albans Steeplechase is considered by many to be the first steeplechase in England. This charming series of six paintings by James Pollard captures the six key points of the race, and all of them have their own factual description of what was happening at that particular point. Take the fourth painting, Struggle at the Bank, where” At this desperate bank several leaps were accomplished in masterly style, many riders unhorsed, Sir William Geary’s Arab takes the lead, with the others following at a rattling pace”.
Valentine Art Reproductions has obtained permission from the National Trust for Scotland to reproduce the series. The originals hang in Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, and more recently the home of the late Mary, Duchess of Montrose. Part of the castle dates from the 13th Century, and there are many trophies and sporting prints, of which this Pollard series is a prime example.
Valentine Art’s reproductions must not be confused with, or compared to, conventional flat art prints. Our process, which is endorsed in terms of quality by Christies of London, looks and feels just like an original oil. Every single copy is painstakingly finished by our team of artists to give, as accurately as possible, the authentic and realistic three dimensional brushstroke effect of the original. The prices are given for both stretched canvases, ready for framing of your own choice, or we have given a traditional framing option as shown.
